Luckey – Write and update cards with encoders
Introduction to Luckey Encoders
Luckey Encoders introduce a streamlined, secure approach to managing physical RFID credentials within your access control ecosystem. Encoders are dedicated, online RFID reader/writer hardware components or external writer devices connected directly to your system. By placing a physical RFID card or key fob onto the encoder for just a few seconds, administrators can instantaneously program access permissions directly onto the physical device.
Managing Encoders in Luckey Web
Before utilizing this streamlined programming workflow, encoders must be correctly deployed and provisioned on-site by an authorized system installer. Once installed, system administrators can view, monitor, and prioritize the fleet of devices directly within the cloud management platform.
View Encoders and Set Preferences
- Log in to the Luckey Web Application using your administrator credentials.
- Navigate to the left sidebar and select Platform Management → Settings.
- Locate the Encoders section to view a complete list of all online, active RFID writing devices registered to your plant.
- Review the technical identifiers and real-time connectivity status of each encoder.
- Set Preferred Encoders: Administrators have the flexibility to flag one or more devices as a Preferred Encoder.
Tip: Marking an encoder as preferred ensures it automatically populates at the very top of the device selection menu during credential creation, reducing administrative overhead and accelerating the desktop enrollment process.

Choosing an Encoding Type
When adding or updating a Card access credential under Access Rules → Cards, the presence of an active encoder infrastructure changes how data can be written. You will be prompted to choose between two distinct encoding options based on your structural workflow.
Comparison Matrix: Autoenroll vs. External Reader (Encoder)
| Encoding Feature | Autoenroll | External Reader (Encoder) |
| Primary Approach | Card written by perimetral online validation gates | Immediate desk-side hardware writing. |
| Card ID Requirements | Mandatory. The administrator must manually input or paste the card’s printed unique ID into the form. | Automated. The administrator does not need to know or input the card ID beforehand. |
| Propagation Mode | Real-Time / Scheduled. Data waits at perimeter validators. | Instantaneous. The unique UUID is fetched and credentials are bound directly at the encoder. |
| Best Used For | Distributed teams or users who can validate independently at a perimeter pass. | Direct, front-desk deployment where a physical card is handed over immediately. |
Creating and Writing an RFID Credential
Follow these step-by-step instructions to create an access rule and physically program an RFID device utilizing an active encoder:
Step 1: Fill out the Credential Form
- Go to Access Rules → Cards and click the Add (+) button to open the credential creation form.
- Select the appropriate Card Type and Technology (e.g., MIFARE Classic, DESFire, or proprietary ISEO variants).
- Assign the credential to an Authorized User using their unique Default Tag.
- Map the authorized Smart Locks or Lock Special Tags that this physical card is permitted to open.
- Define the rule’s strict Validity Interval, designating the permitted date range, active daily time slots, and valid weekdays.
- Under the Encoding Options field, select External Reader (Encoder).
- Click Save.

Step 2: The Encoder Interaction Modal
Immediately after clicking save, the platform securely validates the parameters and triggers an interactive on-screen wizard to manage the physical writing process:
- Select Device: In the pop-up modal, select the exact physical encoder you are currently standing next to. Devices flagged as Preferred Encoders will conveniently display at the top of this drop-down list.
- Initialize Writing: Click the confirmation button to activate the hardware pathway.
- Present Device: The chosen encoder will initialize and remain active for a 30-second window. Place the physical RFID card, badge, or key fob flat against the encoder interface before the countdown timer expires.
Step 3: Operation Outcomes
- Success Confirmation: If the card is correctly placed within the 30-second window, the encoder automatically scans the chip’s internal UUID, binds it to the cloud user account, and flashes a success message on the screen. The card is now Updated and fully prepared for field deployment.
- Error Mitigation: If no card is detected before the countdown reaches zero, or if communication is interrupted, the platform displays an error message. If this occurs, simply verify the hardware connection, ensure you are utilizing compatible RFID technology, and click Retry Writing to initialize a new 30-second window.
The Credential Programmer lets you write access permissions directly onto RFID cards and key fobs using a USB PC/SC reader connected to your PC. This feature is only available on Windows.
The programmer panel shows four status cards:
| Card | What it shows |
| Bridge | Status of the Windows background service. Ready / Starting / Error / Not available. |
| Reader | Whether a USB credential reader is plugged in and recognised. Shows the MAC address when connected. |
| VAM | Connection to the Luckey VAM server (credential management back-end). Idle / Connecting / Connected / Error. |
| Encoder ID | The unique ID assigned to this programmer after initialisation. |
